Soft, rubber, plushy, squeaky toys, the choices are endless. The easiest way to determine what dog toy to get is to know the preferences of your pooch; also consider its age and playing habits.

Be Sure It's a Safe Toy

When buying a new toy for your pooch, make sure it's safe. By safe, I mean it's made of materials that won't harm it. This should be the very first thing to consider when checking dog toys. If your dog is still growing and strengthening its teeth, choose a toy that's simple for playing with. Soft enough and sufficiently interesting for the dog to play with, and yet without any sharp edges or materials that could harm the dog's mouth.

On the other hand, if you have an adult dog with strong teeth, start checking firm dog toys for sale. hey won't be impressed or inspired to play with it. Also, no matter the age of your dog, avoid small toys because they can easily be swallowed and stuck in the dog's throat, which could have fatal outcomes. Toys with ribbons, strings, and small attached parts will be easily destroyed and ripped off, so avoid them as well. Your dog will see these parts as a challenge and probably won't stop chewing and scratching until they're off.

Toys with fillings such as polystyrene beads or nutshells are not safe as well. Squeaky toys aren't a good idea; the sound can be irritating (for you as well) and even though the toy would be challenging to play with, the dog might not be able to stop until the sound stops. While squeaky toys are dogs’ favourites, they might not calm down before they destroy the squeaky sound. Make sure you supervise your dog if they're playing with a squeaky toy to avoid potential ingestion or choking. Soft toys should be machine washable (this way you can always be able to keep the toys clean). If you go for a soft toy, make sure it can be machine washable.

Comfort Toys

A comfort toy for dogs is probably the most common toy dog owners get. These are soft and any dog will love them; they'll remind them of the soft plush toys they played with when they were puppies. If you have a puppy, don't hesitate to get one of these. Not only they would feel safer napping next to a soft plushy toy, but also could easily chew it and play with it, without any risk of injuries. Make sure this is a large toy, so there is no risk of ingestion or choking.

Rope Dog Toys

Rope toys are perhaps the most adored type of toys among dogs. They are perfect for chewing, fetching, tug-of-war, you name it. You can take this toy to the park, or play with your dog at home or in your backyard. Many dogs, especially larger breeds, can easily shred any toy, but this one will endure their sharp teeth. These toys are perfect for cleaning dogs' teeth because chewing will work just as brushing. Be sure to supervise your dog when they play with this toy, just in case.

Treat-Dispensing Toys

These toys are a special challenge because they will stimulate your dog to find the treat. Usually made of rubber or plastic, these toys come in all sizes and shapes. You can put dry food or other dog treat and give the toy to your dog. It will keep it busy for hours. If you're travelling and your god isn't a fan of long rides, this toy will soothe them and help them stay calm.

Dog Puzzles

Yes, there's such a thing as dog puzzles. Dog puzzles are interactive toys and another design of food dispensing toys. This type of toy demands both your and your dog's attention. Dog puzzles are meant to challenge your dog; these toys have mechanisms that hide treats and your dog should find it as an award. Choose this type of toy for teaching your dog new cognitive skills and keep it mentally stimulated.

Non-plush Squeaky Toys

These toys are perfect for playing outside. Often made of plastic, rubber, or vinyl, the non-plush squeaky toys are perfect for chewing. If you want it to last longer, choose a rubber option. Of course, it all depends on how much of a chewer your dog is (and how strong its teeth are). If your dog isn't a strong chewer, you can get a thin toy made of vinyl. Make sure to supervise your dog when it chews it. Thin squeaky toys are cheap, but not so durable. Dogs for sure will love the sound (it reminds them of a prey sound they should kill or tame).

However, no matter how much your dog loves such toys, you will probably not enjoy the sound a lot. But, you can find toys with “silent” squeakers. Silent squeaky toys are inaudible for humans, but dogs can easily hear the high-pitched sound. In the end, your dog should be happy and content with its toys. When searching for toys, make sure to read about the materials, if they contain any small parts, whether they're machine washable, etc. And let's not forget, dogs love their toys, but they will always prefer to play with you.
